MOSCOW - A tanker exploded and caught fire Wednesday as it was docked in the Russian Baltic city of Kaliningrad, Russian media reported.

State television showed footage of firefighters hosing water at a ship with a red hull as thick black smoke poured from the vessel.

There were early reports of one victim, according to the television. Ten fire engines were in action, the channel said.

"An explosion took place on the tanker at Kaliningrad's Yantar shipyard," Interfax news agency quoted the local chief of the emergency situations ministry, Alexander Kulchitsky, as saying.

"There is a fire.... I do not yet have the details. I am going to the site of the explosion myself."

It was not immediately clear what fuel or other cargo the tanker was carrying.
