BAGHDAD - Three more US soldiers have been killed in attacks and fighting with rebels in Iraq, the American military announced Tuesday, raising its death toll for the month of October to 89.

In the western Iraqi province of Al-Anbar, a Sunni rebel stronghold, two marines died on Monday of injuries "due to enemy action", the military said in a statement.

Also on Monday another soldier was reported missing in Baghdad.

The military earlier said a 12th soldier was killed over the weekend, in a roadside bombing Sunday in the capital.

If the toll continues to mount at the same rate until the end of October it will become the deadliest month for US forces in Iraq since November 2004, when they famously fought fierce street battles in the western town of Fallujah.

At least 2,795 members of US forces have been killed or died accidentally in the Iraq campaign since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures.
