Fight Against Bird Flu

ANKARA - "Turkey prepared a project to fight against bird flu which is a global threat, between the years 2006 and 2010," said Turkish Agriculture & Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker.

"World Bank granted 34.3 million USD of long-term loan, European Commission granted 12.7 million USD and the United States 1 million USD as donation to Turkey for the project. Also Turkish government and private sector will provide 7 million USD for the project," he added.

Eker, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson and World Bank Turkey Director Andrew Vorkink signed a protocol on U.S. donation for the project in Ankara today.

Eker said that total cost of the project is 55 million USD.

He noted that 2.5 million winged animals were culled in 54 cities of Turkey due to bird flu, adding that the disease was completely wiped out in Turkey as of May 1st, 2006.
