Ankara - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Turkey on Thursday stressed that he would fight for the territorial integrity of Iraq, vowing that Kirkuk, an oil-rich city in northern Iraq, would remain an Iraqi city.
Speaking in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, al-Maliki said that his government would also increase co-operation with Turkey with regard to combatting terrorism but refused to go into any specifics.
"We will not harbour any groups that harm our neighbours," al-Maliki said.
Turkey has been pressing for US and Iraqi forces to crack down on Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) camps in northern Iraq, from where they launch raids on Turkey across the border, but has been dissappointed by a lack of any action.
Al-Maliki pointed out that his government had closed down a PKK representative office in Baghdad but refused to go into any details concerning what further action his government might take.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey stood side-by-side with its neighbour and noted that Turkey was ready to train Iraqi security personnel.
