GAP Dams Produced 21 Bln Kw/h Energy Last Year, Ozgul

SANLIURFA - "48.5 percent of the total hydroelectrical energy produced in Turkey last year were obtained from the dams in Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) region," Muammer Yasar Ozgul, the chairman of the GAP Regional Development Administration, said on Tuesday.
Dams in GAP produced 21 billion kw/h of hydroelectrical energy last year, he told A.A correspondent.
According to Ozgul, a total of 44 billion kw/h of hydroelectrical energy was produced in Turkey in 2006.
Ozgul said that GAP region had 12.2 percent share in Turkey`s 175.7 billion kw/h of thermic, hydraulic and wind energy potential.
"260,955 hectares of land have been opened to irrigation in Firat and Dicle basins, while construction of irrigation networks in 114,067 hectares of field continues," he stated.
``Two protocols were signed with Israel and the USA for irrigation projects in GAP region``, he added.
