Sony to boost imaging sensor production on strong digital camera demand
Sony Corp. said Wednesday it is investing nearly 500 million dollars to boost production of image sensors used in digital cameras and camera-equipped mobile phones.
The company said it will invest some 60 billion yen (494 million dollars) to expand clean room facilities and image sensor fabrication capacity at a factory in southern Japan.
The investment will take place from this year through March 2010, Sony said.
"Sony is positioning image sensors as a key focus area of its semiconductor business," the company said in a statement.
"Through the reinforcement of this facility, Sony will strengthen supply and provide the platform for further image sensor business growth," it said.
The company is among global leaders in image sensors.
