Serbia's electoral commission confirmed Monday that the pro-Western coalition led by President Boris Tadic's Democratic Party had won weekend general elections.

The "For a European Serbia" alliance garnered 38.8 percent in Sunday's parliamentary elections based on a preliminary count of almost 98 percent of ballots, commission official Dragan Vukmirovic told reporters.

The ultra-nationalist Radical Party came in second with 29.2 percent of support, trailed by outgoing nationalist Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's Democratic Party of Serbia with 11.3 percent.

The Socialist Party of late autocratic Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic scored 7.6 percent, while the pro-Western Liberal Democratic Party won 5.3 percent.

Turnout at Sunday's legislative and local elections was 61 percent, said the commission, which must give its final results by Thursday.
