European Commission Closely Monitors Ak Party Closure Case
MARDIN - The European Commission closely monitors the closure case against the ruling party in Turkey.
Marc Pierini, the head of the delegation of the European Commission to Turkey, said on Monday that they were closely monitoring the closure case against the governmental Justice & Development (AK) Party.
The top court of Turkey decided on March 31st to examine an indictment on closure of the AK Party.
The commission did not want to comment on the case when the trial process was going on, Pierini told a press conference in the southeastern province of Mardin.
Pierini said that the commission would make public its opinion after the trial was over.
On the terrorist organization PKK, Pierini said European Union (EU) member states included the PKK on their list of terrorist networks in 2002.
Pierini said the EU was against all types of violence and terrorism, and told reporters that peace, stability and tranquility of its members and candidate countries were for the best interests of the union.
Commenting on his trip to Mardin, Pierini said that his visit was very fruitful and it would be reflected positively on the progress report of Turkey.
Pierini said the EU would continue to support projects aiming to improve cultural tourism in Mardin.
The head of the European Commission Delegation said that he was impressed by the solidarity between the mufti and metropolitan in Mardin, and told reporters that their impressions would be effective in the reports regarding Turkey.
Pierini arrived in Mardin on Saturday, met Governor Mehmet Kiliclar, businessmen, religious authorities, and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
