Over 200 Turkish Lawmakers Resign As Turkey-israel Friendship Group Members

ANKARA - The number of Turkish MPs, who resigned as members of the Turkey-Israel Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group, exceeded 200, officials of the Turkish Parliament said on Wednesday.

Senior figures of the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party, including Turkish Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Murat Mercan and AK Party Deputy Chairman Egemen Bagis, resigned on Monday after the Israeli offensive against Gaza that killed nearly 380 and wounded more than 1,500.

Another AK Party deputy Omer Celik, who is also a political adviser to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, resigned on Wednesday as a member of the group.

"I believe that unfair and extremely violent Israeli offensive against the people of Gaza, who suffer poverty, is unacceptable," Celik said in his letter of resignation.

The group comprises 307 Turkish lawmakers and more deputies are expected to quit as group members, parliamentary sources said.
