EROGLU: “AN AGREEMENT CAN BE REACHED IN 15 DAYS IF GREEK CYPRIOTS WANT AN AGREEMENT”

President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Dervis Eroglu reiterated that if Greek Cypriot side displayed the necessary political will, long standing Cyprus problem could be solved within 15 days.

The President responding to questions in a program broadcasted by all 8 television channels in TRNC, said while in the office he would strive to reach best possible agreement on the Cyprus problem, or to overcome the barriers in front of Turkish Cypriots if a settlement can not be reached.

He said all aspects of the Cyprus problem except guarantees had been discussed adding, “An agreement can be reached in 15 days if the Greek Cypriots want an agreement.”

Quoting Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias as saying “I have made the biggest compromise by accepting federal solution, there will be no more compromise on my behalf” EroÄŸlu said, “As a person sitting across Christofias for the last two years I can with full confidence say that he does not have the will for a settlement”.

Eroglu said that, while Greek Cypriot leadership publicly made it known that they were against arbitration, any time limit and multilateral meeting; Turkish Cypriots were against an open ended process.

He added that he did not believe anybody can convince Greek Cypriot side for a solution while international community continued to impose sanctions on Turkish Cypriots.

Eroglu said Turkish Cypriots made many moves to strike an agreement, which all had been refused by the Greek Cypriots who were also antagonist on “give and take”.

About the proposal by Greek Cypriot side on fenced of city of Varosha that included opening the place up in return of opening the Famagusta Port, Eroglu said having not received a written proposal yet, the proposal was not viable because Famagusta Port was already open. Eroglu emphasized that Varosha is a TRNC territory.


ECONOMY AND ENERGY MINISTER ATUN PARTICIPATED IN WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM


World Economic Forum ‘Middle-East, North Africa and Eurasia’ Summit started yesterday in Istanbul.

It has been stated that this forum has been arranged for the first time in Turkey and shall continue for two days. Total 1100 persons from 70 different countries and 50 government authorities from 20 countries including Azerbaijan, Georgia and Tunisia will participate in the forum. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan , Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu , The Minister of Economy Zafer CaÄŸlayan, The Minister of Finance Mehmet Simsek, The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yıldız, EU Minister Egemen Bagıs and TRNC’s Economy and Energy Minister Sunat Atun paricipated in the meeting.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Economy and Energy, Atun realized meetings with Turkish Ministers Caglayan, Yıldız and Babacan and gave interview to some press organizations. According to the statement of the Ministry, Atun called Greek Cypriot side to make cooperation with the Turkish side on the issue of natural gas.

Giving information about the projects of the country, Atun said that TRNC will be an important energy center with the studies of Turkish Petroleum Corporation, implementation of Water and Electricity Projects.

Within the framework of today’s meeting of World Economic Forum, Atun will participate in the meeting to be organized under the title of ‘Energy’.


EU WARNED GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION


Alarm bells are ringing in the South Cyprus. European Union warned Greek Cypriot side to make savings in order not to need financial aid.  In his statement to ‘Financial Times’, Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias said that Greek Cypriot Government may need financial aid from the EU. In order to strengthen the fund of Cyprus Popular Bank, Greek Cypriot government should find at least 1 billion 800 million euros until the end of this month. Greek Cypriot government was affected by the economical crisis of Greece.


SANER “ERCAN AIRPORT WILL BE THE GREATEST INVESTMENT”

TRNC Public Works and Transportation Minister Ersan Saner stated that “New Ercan Airport” will be financially the greatest investment in Cyprus and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and added that the construction of the new building would be completed in less than 4 years.


Minister Saner pointed out that the tender process for new Ercan Airport has been initiated last Friday and will continue till August, and added that the tender for Ercan is considered as “Privatization” however it is “transfer of operational rights” according to the Article 18 of Privatization Law. He emphasized that the airport will serve to the public as the property of TRNC at the end of 25 year operational right.

Saner stated that the “Instrument Landing System” will be put into service in Ercan Airport at the end of June, by this way the planes can make safe landing and take-off although the weather conditions are unfavorable and this step will be important for achieving the international standards.


Stating that in addition, they carry out the privatization studies related with Telecommunication Office which are implemented together with European Union by involving all stakeholders in the sector and they come to the ending phase, Minister Saner said “I believe that necessary steps for the privatization of Telecommunication Office will be taken as soon as possible.”


“ÅžEHÄ°T TEÄžMEN CANER GÖNYELÄ° 2012 SEARCH AND RESCUE EXERCISE”

It has been announced that Åžehit TeÄŸmen Caner Gönyeli-2012 Search and Rescue Exercise will be conducted with the participation of unmilitary and military elements included in Turkish and TRNC Search and Rescue Organizations between the dates of 11-14 June 2012.


According to the Press Office of Security Forces, the exercise will be conducted in the offshore of GazimaÄŸusa in Eastern Mediterranean, in territories and territorial waters of TRNC and in international waters included in Turkish search and rescue areas.
