All of the Turkish dailies covered the message of the imprisoned head of terrorist PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, at the Nowruz celebration held in Turkey's southeastern province of Diyarbakir. "The era of weapons has ended" headlined daily HURRIYET and "Farewell to weapons" headlined daily MILLIYET referring to Ocalan's historic call for the terrorists where he said, "We have reached the point where the guns must be silenced and where ideas must speak. A new era has started, where it is politics, not guns, which is at the forefront. We have reached the stage where our armed elements need to retreat beyond the border." "Biji (Long Live) Turkey" headlined daily RADIKAL parallel to Ocalan's statements of "Turks and Kurds living under the flag of Islam for over a thousand years" and "Turks and Kurds fighting side to side at the War of Independence and during the establishment of the Turkish parliament." "PKK retreat" headlined daily SABAH over the positive response from Qandil to Ocalan's message where Qandil stated that they would implement the laying down of weapons.
Moreover, most of the Turkish dailies covered the statements of Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in response to the message of Ocalan at Nowruz celebrations. Erdogan assessed the message in Denmark where he is on a formal visit. "The call is positive" headlined daily HURRIYET and "Implementation more important than call" added daily MILLIYET over Erdogan's statements where he said, "I find the call, the invitation, a positive development. But the essential thing is what is put in practice." "Call positive, (Turkish) flag absent" headlined daily VATAN and "Flag should have been there" headlined daily "YENI SAFAK" referring to Erdogan's criticism of the absence of a Turkish flag at the Nowruz celebrations in Diyarbakir. "Turkish flags should have been present at the celebrations. The lack of flags contradicted Ocalan's message. It was provocative," said Erdogan, according to dailies.
