Having served for four terms, Meshaal emerged as the leader of the Hamas at the election in Cairo, Egypt, which was closed to the press.
Three names, among them the prime minister of the Palestinian government in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh and Deputy chairman of Hamas Political Bureau Musa Ebu Merzuk, were elected Meshaal's deputies.
The election was held in an undisclosed location determined by the Egyptian intelligence.
Election process within Hamas that started in April last year, ended without the selection of a political bureau chief.
