ANKARA - Turkish Cypriots will be as constructive as possible in negotiations on the Cyprus issue, a Turkish Cypriot negotiator said Monday.

"This is like a trade, but this trade should be meaningful and oriented toward mutual compromise. We should negotiate our deals in order to achieve results in these talks," Kudret Ozersay told the Anadolu Agency.

He explained that a joint statement agreed on by Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders last week includes an outline to guide negotiations.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) appointed Ozersay as chief negoatiator after Turkish and Greek Cypriots relaunched talks after long pause.

Community leaders on the divided island issued a joint statement last week on the status of settlement which recommends recognizing the equal status of the two states, while aiming to bring the divided communities closer under a federated government.
