Beyoglu mayor: "It was not an act of terror"

ISTANBUL - An explosion took place in a building on Kazanci street of Istanbul`s Taksim on Monday wounding at least four people.

Many nearby buildings also suffered damage. Beyoglu Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan said those four people were taken to the hospital.

"The blast occurred in a building, probably at an art center, due to gas leak," said Demircan. "It is not an act of terror. There are damages to the nearby buildings."

He said the firefighters suspected the explosion was because of gas leak and added that people could smell the gas in the street.

Governor of Istanbul Huseyin Avni Mutlu previously said, "The incident occurred most likely following a gas leak or gas cylinder blast."

Police have cordoned off the area and an investigation is underway.
