BRUSSELS - The U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel urged Russia on Thursday to avoid any action on Ukraine that could be misinterpreted.
Hagel told a press conference, after attending a NATO defense meeting, that Russia must be transparent about its military activities on its border with Ukraine.
"This is a time for very cool, wise leadership on the Russian’s side, and on everybody's side," he said.
Hagel also reaffirmed that the U.S. support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and called on all nations to avoid provocations.
Tensions heightened on Wednesday after Russia ordered a military drill in Crimea, where the country maintains a sizable military presence.
