CANAKKALE - Australia`s ambassador to Turkey visited western city Canakkale`s governor, Ahmet Cinar, ahead of the Gallipoli battle anniversary on March 18.

The ambassador, Martin Larsen, said that Canakkale, where the Gallipoli battle took place during WWI in 1915, has a crucial place in the hearts of Australians.

Australia has a consulate in Canakkale, unlike any other country, due to the high number of Anzac-origin Australian visitors every March to the city in commemoration of the lost Anzacs during the Gallipoli War.

More than 26,000 Australian causalities were left on the shores of the Canakkale (Dardanelles) strait, in Canakkale, while fighting for the British army against the Ottomans.
