KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine`s navy chief defected Sunday to the country`s Crimea autonomous republic only a day after he was appointed as the head of the naval forces.
Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky swore allegiance to the Crimea region in a press appearance in Sevastopol alongside the region`s local prime minister, Sergey Aksenov.
Ukraine`s interim defense minister has said Berezovsky was sacked and treason charges were pressed against him. Admiral Serhiy Hayduk was appointed to replace Berezovsky.
