Egyptian policeman killed in Sinai

CAIRO – An Egyptian policeman has been gunned down by unknown assailants in the restive northeastern Sinai Peninsula.
In a statement late Thursday, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said a policeman of the Rafah crossing police force was killed by unknown gunmen.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Sinai has recently seen an unprecedented rise in militant attacks targeting security forces in the northeastern border region, which have left dozens of security personnel dead since the army`s July`s ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.
The Egyptian army is already mounting a wide-ranging military operation, launched last September, in Sinai with the stated objective of countering the militant attacks.
The campaign is also aimed at destroying the network of tunnels linking Gaza to Sinai, which constitute a major commercial artery used to bring vital commodities – including food, fuel and building materials – into the besieged coastal enclave.
