Turkey's Gul enquires after Kuwaiti emir's health

KUWAIT CITY – Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Friday phoned Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah to enquire after the latter's health following a minor surgical procedure in the US.

During the conversation, the Kuwaiti emir expressed his gratitude to Gul for the gesture, the state-run KUNA news agency reported.

In a statement, Kuwait's royal court said Sheikh Sabah had undergone a "successful" surgery in the US.

It did not, however, specify what kind of surgery the emir underwent.

The 85-year-old leader traveled to the US last week for "routine medical checkups," according to earlier reports by KUNA.

Al-Sabah, who has ruled the oil-rich Gulf state since 2006, underwent two major surgeries in 2000 and 2007.

He frequently undergoes medical checkups.
