KIEV, Ukraine – Some 11 border checkpoints in Crimea came under the control of Russian military, Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday.

An online statement from the State Border Guard Service in Ukraine said Russian soldiers attacked the Schelkino border protection unit and the Ukrainian soldiers on duty.

"Today Russian extremists attacked the radar post at Sevastopol. Armed attackers in military uniform and civilian clothes broke the door and entered the building. Radio technical units and telecommunication cables were dissembled and destroyed," the statement also noted.

Ukrainian military says there are around 30,000 Russian soldiers in Crimea.
