KIEV, Ukraine - The Ukrainian defense ministry said Sunday that an airport and five Ukrainian brigades in Crimea have been surrounded by Russian troops amid rising tension between pro and anti-Russian protesters.

According to a statement released by the ministry`s press office, Russian troops beset the Ukrainian brigade deployed in Belbek Airport of Sevastopol and five naval military departments in Crimea.

Russia is reportedly increasing its number of troops on the Black Sea peninsula and tightening its control there despite calls from western powers to stop. The Russian Army gained control of 11 border guard units on Saturday and one on Sunday.

The Ukrainian military says about 30,000 Russian soldiers are now in Crimea.
