Turkey's president to ask Denmark to support EU process

COPENHAGEN – Turkey’s President expressed hopes Friday that Denmark will voice its support of Turkey’s European Union (EU) membership more loudly.

"[My] Copenhagen visit is a good chance to persuade Denmark about Turkey's full membership to the EU," Abdullah Gul said in an interview with Danish newspaper Politiken before his first presidential visit to Denmark.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Foreign Minister emphasized in a written statement in Politiken that Turkey has recently made progress with economic, political and democratic reforms.

"Turkey's EU accession depends on meeting the full membership criteria. Besides, Turkey should deal with some important issues, such as the principles of the state of law, fundamental rights and freedom of expression," Martin Lidegaard added.

Gul will visit Denmark between March 17-19 under the invitation of Queen Margrethe II.

Denmark only receives two state visits a year.
