ISTANBUL - An Istanbul court indicted 26 Gezi Park protesters on Monday, accusing them of forming an illegal organization to provoke the public to unrest and to participate in unlawful protests.
The indictment, approved by the Criminal Court no: 33, states that 26 people were responsible for the incidents which occurred in the aftermath of the reopening of Istanbul's Gezi Park on July 8, and the court trial date is set for June 12.
The Gezi Park protests began as a small environmental demonstration last summer and mushroomed into nationwide anti-government protests.
The protests erupted after the government moved in May to replace part of Gezi Park at the heart of Istanbul with a mall.
Istanbul Governorate closed the park due to security concerns after thousands of people poured into it.
The leafy park reopened on July 8 but this move was followed by further violent protests.
