SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine - A Ukrainian soldier was killed Tuesday in an attack on a military base in Crimea, according to Ukraine's Defense Ministry.
Shots were fired when masked gunmen attacked a Ukrainian military base in the Autonomous Crimean Republic's capital Simferopol, ministry spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov said.
He noted the shooters' identities remain unknown.
Putin signed an agreement with Crimean political leaders Tuesday annexing the Autonomous Republic of Crimea after Sunday's referendum, in which over 95 percent of the electorate voted to join Russia.
Ukraine and the West have condemned the referendum as illegal and a violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Crimea was plunged into crisis when armed gunmen, widely believed to be Russian Special Forces, seized Simferopol airport on February 27-28.
