KIEV, Ukraine - Ukrainian Defense Ministry authorizes its forces in Crimea to use weapons after masked gunmen kills’ Ukrainian soldier in the peninsula.

A statement made by the ministry said the men who attacked the military base in Simferopol were dressed in the military uniforms of the Russian Army.

"The Ukrainian servicemen deployed in Crimea are allowed to use arms to protect themselves by the Decision of Acting Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Ukraine and Acting Minister of Defense of Ukraine, following the order of the Chief of General Staff," the statement said.

The Ukrainian soldier, identified by the defense ministry as warrant officer S. V. Kakurin, died after being shot in the neck when gunmen attacked the military base in Simferopol, Crimea.
