GAZA CITY – The Ezzeddin Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, on Thursday claimed responsibility for the digging of a border tunnel between the Gaza Strip and Israel that was recently discovered by the Israeli army.

"The discovery of the tunnel was not an intelligence or security achievement," spokesman Abu Ubaidah told a press conference.

"Rather, the tunnel only collapsed because of the rains," he added.

The spokesman said that "Mujahideen (fighters) had repaired the tunnel after it had collapsed because of heavy rains two months ago.

"But it collapsed again a few days ago," he added.

The Al-Qassam Brigades spokesman said the Israeli army had discovered the tunnel only three days ago.

The Israeli army has not made any official comment on the discovery of the tunnel yet.

An Israeli website, however, reported late Thursday that the army had discovered a tunnel near an Israeli village in the southern part of the country.

The Israeli army announced last October that it had discovered a tunnel between Israel and Gaza that would have been used in launching a major operation inside Israel.

Al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility for digging this tunnel too.
