BAGHDAD – Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, which the Iraqi government had been battling for weeks, have staged a military parade in the western city of Fallujah, a tribal source said.
The militants marched in the streets Thursday night, brandishing their flags and weapons in a show of force, the source told Anadolu Agency on Friday, requesting anonymity.
Iraqi security forces said Thursday that ten ISIL militants, including two senior leaders, had been killed in an army shelling of Fallujah's al-Sabehat district.
Iraqi government troops have been pursuing ISIL militants since December, when the group seized control of parts of the western Anbar province, of which Fallujah is a major city.
The Iraqi military had announced an intention to launch a ground operation in the city but the date for the operation has not yet been announced.
