ADANA - Heather A. Higginbottom, the U.S. deputy secretary of state, has visited the Syrian refugee camp in Adana, a southern province of Turkey.

During her trip, she also stopped to visit a family from Syria who currently live in the Adana Saricam Syrian refugee camp observing firsthand the support the U.S. is providing Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Higginbottom said that the U.S. has increased its funding for humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people displaced by the civil war.

There are currently 21 refugee camps in 10 provinces of Turkey hosting over 200,000 Syrian refugees according to the UN's refugee agency.

The Syrian civil war, which entered its fourth year last week, has claimed more than 140,000 lives, according to the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights.
