Besiktas climb to second place in Turkish League following Galatasaray's unexpected defeat
ANKARA - Besiktas shattered Akhisar Belediyespor’s hopes of an away win at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Sunday with a convincing 3-0 win that saw them climb to second place with 50 points, one point ahead of arch-rivals Galatasaray.
Veli Kavlak and Mustafa Pektemek put Besiktas two goals ahead within the opening 10 minutes and Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson added a third in the second half against Akhisar Belediyespor, who are now in ninth place in the Spor Toto Super League.
The Black Eagles’ three-goal victory gave them a one-point lead in the league over Galatasaray, who received a shocking defeat on Saturday against league's bottom side Kayserispor.
Leaders Fenerbahce with 54 points will visit Gaziantepspor on Monday to play the closing game of matchday 26 in Super League. Fenerbahce are also awaiting the decision of the Turkish Football Federation on their suspended game against Trabzonspor, to find out if they are also going to be awarded with three points for the controversial game.
