GAZA CITY – Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Tuesday congratulated Turkish Prime Minster Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his party's recent electoral victory.

In a Tuesday phone call to the Turkish premier, Haniyeh said that the electoral victory by Erdogan's Justice and Development (AK) Party in local Turkish elections "came at a very sensitive time," according to Gaza's official Al-Ray news agency.

Erdogan, for his part, reiterated Turkey's support for the Palestinian cause and the besieged Gaza Strip, which continues to reel under an eight-year Israeli blockade.

According to preliminary vote results, Erdogan's AK Party garnered 45 percent of the vote, putting it well ahead of the main opposition Republican People's Party, which secured around 28 percent.
