CAIRO – A third explosion went off outside Cairo University on Wednesday, moments after two other blasts in the same place killed a senior police officer and injured five others, an Anadolu Agency correspondent reported from the scene.

Two homemade bombs exploded earlier outside Cairo University in the Giza province.

According to a security source, the twin blasts killed Police Brig. Gen. Tareq al-Mergawi, head of the West Giza investigation department.

The source added that five other police officers had also been injured in the initial blasts, including Giza deputy security chief Maj. Gen. Abdel-Raouf al-Serafi.

According to the AA correspondent, a third blast rocked the area shortly afterward, but it remains unclear whether this caused any casualties.

A security source said a fourth bomb, too, had been found nearby and defused.

Security personnel at the university evacuated the campus, while all classes were cancelled.

No group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's blasts.
