Afghan police officer shoots two journalists

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan police officer shot at two foreign female journalists, killing one and critically injuring the other in the eastern part of Afghanistan on Friday, officials said.

German photographer from the Associated Press Anja Niedringhaus, 48, was killed on the spot, while Canadian AP reporter Kathy Gannon was critically injured. Gannon is receiving medical attention.

The attack reportedly took place when the two journalists were in a police district headquarters in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Khost.

The shooting comes less than a month after a 51-year-old Swedish radio journalist, Nils Horner, was shot and killed in a heavily guarded district in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Afghanistan has beefed up security measures ahead of Saturday's presidential election. The Taliban released a statement in March warning Afghans to stay away from voting booths, vowing that it would use "all force" to disrupt the elections.
