Fifteen-year-old from Turkey becomes sailing champ

IZMIR - Fifteen-year-old Rasim Yasar from Turkey has won a title in the children’s sailing competition Optimist Asian Championship in Bahrain.

Yasar's trainer from Izmir Ali Riza Mete Sailing Club, Gurbuz Arikan praised the young athlete's success.

"Our main goal was to be able to compete with Singaporean athletes who are very strong. Rasim Yasar became a champion as we prepared for this goal,” Arikan said.

“This is a huge success for our country and our club. I wish him all the best in the upcoming World Cup in September in Argentina," he said.

Held on March 28-April 6, the championship hosted 130 athletes from 22 countries and Turkey was represented with seven, according to information on the organizer’s website.

Two Singaporean athletes accompanied Yasar in the podium, Lu Junrui coming second and Phua Shynee third.

The Optimist is a single-handed small boat recognized as an international class in sailing competitions.
