TRIPOLI – Two people were killed and three others injured in a failed jailbreak attempt in the Libyan capital Tripoli, a prison official said Saturday.
"Security forces have besieged the Ain Zara prison in south-western Tripoli," prison deputy chief Ashraf al-Nuaimi told Anadolu Agency.
Militants had attempted to break into the prison late Friday as prisoners tried to escape the detention facility.
Al-Nuaimi said some Libyan and foreign rights activists arrived at the prison on Saturday to check on the conditions of the prisoners.
One of Libya's largest, Ain Zara prison is packed with hundreds of prisoners on criminal offences. The prison had witnessed repeated attempts for escape by prisoners.
Libya has been suffering political and security instability since the overthrow of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
