DOHA – A Saudi border guard was killed and another injured on Monday in southern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen.
The incident brings the number of Saudi guards killed on the border with Yemen to three in less than one week.
"An exchange of fire occurred at dawn Monday on the Yemen border between a [Saudi] border patrol and smugglers," Saudi newspaper Al-Jazirah's website quoted an unnamed Saudi source as saying.
The same source added that the 20-minute gunfight had led to the death of a Saudi border guard and the injury of another.
The source did not elaborate further, but the Saudi-Yemen border is known to be a hotbed of smuggling activity.
Last Wednesday, Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki said two Saudi border guards had been killed in an exchange of fire with unidentified individuals inside Yemen.
He added that unidentified militants had fired upon a Saudi patrol from the Yemeni side of the border.
