55 Al-Qaeda militants killed in Abyan airstrikes: Yemen
By Mohamed al-Samei, Monday, April 21, 2014
SANAA – A total of 55 Al-Qaeda militants, including three senior leaders, have been killed in airstrikes in the southern Abyan province, Yemen's Interior Ministry said Monday.
In a statement, the ministry said that "Arab and foreign terrorists" had been among those killed in Sunday's airstrikes.
Al-Qaeda militants remain active in several parts of southern Yemen, from where they continue to stage sporadic attacks on army and police targets.
Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests in 2011 forced autocratic president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in office.
In the three years since, authorities have struggled to restore law and order to the restive southern Arabian country.
