Turkish Assembly marks 94th anniversary of foundation

ANKARA – The independence of Turkish citizens, the state of the Republic of Turkey and democracy is owed to the National Assembly, according to Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek on Wednesday at the 94th anniversary of Grand National Assembly of Turkey’s foundation and National Sovereignty and Children's Day.
Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's main opposition CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, MHP leader Devlet Bahceli, ministers and members of parliament participated in the ceremony held in the first assembly building.
“The first assembly was founded and has worked under extraordinary circumstances (during War of Independence) however, it never deviated from its legitimate role”, Cicek said.
The Grand National Assembly of Turkey was founded in Ankara on 23 April 1920 in the midst of the Turkish War of Independence. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the first speaker of the Turkish Assembly.
