ADANA – A total of 41 Turkish lawyers refused to represent the suspected killer of a 6-year-old girl in the southern province of Adana, head of the provincial bar association said on Tuesday.

The dead body of the 6-year-old girl, Gizem Akdeniz, who went missing last Sunday, was found stabbed and tied on Tuesday.

Police detained the 25-year-old cousin of the girl, who admitted abducting the child in revenge after the family opposed his marriage proposal to the dead girl's sister. The police did not give the full name of the suspected killer, who is identified only by the initials E.S.

After no lawyer agreed to defend E.S. in court, the bar appointed one of its lawyers to participate in the court hearings of the suspect, chairman of the Adana Bar Association, Mengucek Gazi Citirik, said.

“This event sparked outrage not only in Adana and across Turkey, but also among lawyers," he said.
