CAIRO – Egypt's Christian Pope Tawadros II is expected to arrive in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday on his first Gulf visit.

The visit comes upon an invitation from the UAE president and Crown Prince, Father Ishaq Anba Bishoy, the pastor of St. Antony Cathedral in Abu Dhabi, wrote on his Facebook page.

The visit will be the first by Tawadros to a Gulf country since he took over the Egyptian Orthodox Church in November 2012.

The UAE ambassador in Cairo met Pope Tawadros II two times, the last of which was last March when he visited the pope to offer condolences on the death of his mother.

Pope Tawadros II also called the UAE ambassador in January to inquire after the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed following a surgery.

There is around half a million Christians in the UAE, according to the country's population census.

Emirates' seven churches are all located in Abu Dhabi.
