Napoli beats Fiorentina 3-1 to win the Italian cup for the fifth time in the club's history.
ROME - Napoli beat Fiorentina 3-1 to win the Italian Cup in the final match played at Rome's Stadio Olimpico Saturday for the fifth time in the club's history.
Drama surrounded the match even before kick-off as three Napoli fans were shot outside of the stadium, meaning the game was delayed by 45 minutes.
Napoli made a flying start to the game with Lorenzo Insigne's goal assisted by Slovakian Marek Hamsik in a breakaway in the 11th minute.
About 5 minutes later, Insigne found the back of the net again.
However, before half-time Fiorentina narrowed the gap after Peruvian left midfielder Juan Vargas scored.
Heading into the last 10 minutes of the match, Napoli's Gokhan Inler was shown his second yellow card after a foul and sent off. However, Fiorentina couldn’t take advantage and instead Napoli's Belgian wing forward Dries Mertens scored the third goal for his team in injury time.
It has been reported that one of three fans shot outside of the stadium, 30-year-old Ciro Esposito, is still in a serious condition in hospital.
