This bring to 112 the total death toll since September 2012
DOHA – Saudi Arabia reported on Sunday one new fatality and 15 infections of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), which brings to 112 the total death toll from the virus since September 2012.
In a statement, the Saudi Health Ministry said a 77-year-old man had passed away on Friday while receiving treatment at a state-run hospital in the capital Riyadh.
This is the first coronavirus fatality to be reported in Saudi Arabia in May.
The Health Ministry said 15 more people had contracted the virus on Saturday, bringing total virus infections in the Gulf country to 411 since September 2012.
On Saturday, Saudi Arabia reported four coronavirus deaths.
Along with Saudi Arabia, MRES has been reported in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Jordan and Oman.
MERS, for which no known cure is available, destroys the lungs and kidneys.
It is presumed that long-term physical contact can lead to infection.
