Saudi Arabia on Thursday reported four deaths from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
RIYADH – Saudi Arabia on Thursday reported four deaths from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), commonly known as coronavirus, bringing total fatalities in the kingdom since 2012 to 121.
In a statement, the Health Ministry said that a 65-year-old woman and three others previously diagnosed with MERS had succumbed to the virus.
The ministry added that another 17 people had contracted the virus, bringing the total number of virus infections in the country to 449 since September 2012.
Along with Saudi Arabia, MERS has also been reported in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Jordan and Oman.
MERS, for which no cure is currently known, destroys the lungs and kidneys.
It is presumed that long-term physical contact with infected persons can lead to contagion.
