A senior intelligence officer was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Thursday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi
BENGHAZI, Libya – A senior intelligence officer was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Thursday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, a security source has said.
Ibrahim Senoussi, head of intelligence in Libya's eastern region, was gunned down as he drove his car through the city, the source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.
"The gunmen pursued Senoussi before intercepting him and opening fire on him," the source said, adding that Senoussi had died after sustaining gunshot wounds to the neck and chest, the source added.
The Libyan authorities are yet to comment on the reported assassination, for which no group has claimed responsibility.
Benghazi has recently seen a spate of attacks on army and police personnel amid deteriorating security conditions nationwide.
Libya has struggled to restore order and contain militancy on the streets, which ran rampant with the armed militias who refused to disarm after helping overthrow late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
