Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal beats his Japanese rival Nishikori to claim Madrid Open for the fourth time
MADRID - World's top seeded tennis player Rafael Nadal won his fourth Madrid Open title on Sunday after his Japanese opponent Kei Nishikori was forced to withdraw due to injury.
The world no. 12 Nishikori was gripped by a back injury in the third set when Nadal was leading 3-0.
The first set was claimed by Nishikori 6-2 before Nadal roared back in the second set by winning it 6-4.
The 27-year-old Spaniard became the first player in the tournament history to be crowned Madrid Open champion for the fourth time.
He also won last year's clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital.
With this triumph, Nadal has guaranteed to secure his top seed title before next week's Rome Masters.
