ANKARA - Three-time European champion wrestler, Turkey’s Taha Akgul, has been named as the world’s best competitor in the 125-kilogram freestyle category.

The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles awarded 23-year-old Akgul the accolade Tuesday.

According to Turkish Wrestling Federation, after fellow Turk Riza Kayaalp, Akgul was honored by FILA after they considered the athletes’ recent form and medal hauls.

Having been crowned winner three years in a row in freestyle in Europe, Akgul won gold medal in the European Wrestling Championship held in Vantaa, Finland earlier this year.

Akgul, from Sivas in central Turkey, thanked the chair of Turkish Wrestling Federation, Hamza Yerlikaya, his coaches and parents and said that he wanted to crown this success with world and Olympic titles.
