The drone strike targeted a vehicle carrying six militants in Shabwah's Nasab district
SANAA – Five Al-Qaeda militants were killed Tuesday in a U.S. drone attack in Yemen's southern Shabwah province, a security source has said.
The drone strike targeted a vehicle carrying six militants in Shabwah's Nasab district, the source told Anadolu Agency.
"Five militants were killed and a sixth is in a critical condition," the source said.
There was no official comment on the attack.
US drones frequently launch attacks on suspected Al-Qaeda sites in Yemen.
Yemen recently launched an offensive against suspected Al-Qaeda elements in the country's restive south, where the group continues to stage sporadic attacks on army and police targets.
The past week has seen intense fighting between militants and army troops in the south in which dozens have been killed.
Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests in 2011 forced autocratic president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in power.
In the three years since, authorities have struggled to restore law and order.
