The number of people internally displaced increased by 4.5 million in 2013 mainly due to the ongoing civil war in Syria, according to the UN refugee agency
GENEVA - The UN refugee agency said that a record 33.3 million people were internally displaced in 2013 due to conflict and violence in their own countries.
Approximately 8.2 million people have been displaced due to the conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo said an annual report on "forced displacement" released Wednesday.
Of the people displaced in 2013, Syria accounted for 43 percent. Almost 2.5 million Syrians are now registered as refugees in neighboring countries, such as Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
The total number of internally displaced people in Syria is 6.5 million with Columbia second with 5.7 million internally displaced and Nigeria third with 3.3 million people displaced.
