DOHA – Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Wednesday sent his condolences to Turkish President Abdullah Gul for the death of 245 workers in a Tuesday mine explosion and subsequent fire in western Turkey.

In his message to Gul, the Kuwaiti leader wished injured workers a speedy recovery.

Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah sent similar messages of condolence to the Turkish leader.

Turkey has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the fire as search and rescue operations continue for scores of miners who remain trapped underground.

The explosion and fire at the mine, located in the Soma district in the Manisa province, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
