BENGHAZI, Libya – A Chinese engineer has been shot dead in eastern Libya's restive city of Benghazi, a Libyan security official said Wednesday.
Unidentified gunmen had stormed the headquarters of a construction firm in the city late Tuesday in search of the head of the company, the official told Anadolu Agency.
Neither the Chinese embassy in Libya nor the Libyan authorities have issued a statement on the killing.
Fears have mounted recently that Libya is slipping towards civil war after renegade army general Khalifa Haftar took up arms against militia groups currently serving as part of Libya's regular army.
Haftar says his campaign, dubbed "Operation Dignity," is aimed at "purging" Libya of "extremists."
The Libyan government, for its part, has described the former general's operation as a "coup" against electoral "legitimacy."
