Ukraine has sent in helicopters as they attempt to bring an end to separatists' seizure of the airport in Donetsk.

DONETSK, Ukraine – Ukraine's army helicopters have launched an air raid on the eastern region’s airport and gunshots have been heard, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.

Civilians and reporters evacuated the area around the airport upon the intervention of Ukrainian army following the seizure of the airport by armed pro-Russian separatists.

The separatists from the self-declared "Donetsk People's Republic" stormed the airport early Monday demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops there, a statement from airport press office said.

The pro-Russian separatists' seizure came a day after Ukraine’s presidential elections, which has seen Petro Poroshenko claim victory.
